Social Media Content Calendars are Important

If you’re like me, you want each year to be an amazing year in your life and your business. Most of you probably made a commitment to step up your marketing this year. Maybe you’ve decided to stop dreaming about a marketing plan for your business and actually get out there and do something about it.

Many of you have been ignoring the impact social media marketing can have on your business. Maybe for some of you, it means some changes. The big change I’m challenging you to make this year is to step up your social media marketing by creating a social media content calendar.

Here are three reasons why creating a content calendar is important.

1. The calendar is helpful in planning and developing strategy.

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!” I believe that saying is true. Planning is essential to succeeding. The projects I work on in my business go so much better if I have thought them through from the beginning to the end. Planning and developing strategies also provide a way for you to be better prepared for the year.

2. The calendar creates a framework for ideas to start popping into your head.
One of the biggest things I try to do with my calendar is assign a theme to each month. I also pick one of the programs and products I’m going to market. For example, in January, I may choose to focus on Instagram and new trends and how I can be better prepared for that. One way is by having a social media content calendar. Plus, you would not believe the content that starts flowing from your head once you have this framework on your calendar.

3. The calendar helps you stay more consistent.
The bottom line is, it keeps you on track. No more winging it, fudging it, and hurrying for ideas. It’s right in front of you.

This is “why” you should have a social media content calendar. Next is the “how” of the process.

Tips on Creating A Social Media Calendar

1. Set up a calendar. I recommend using an Excel spreadsheet to create your own. Once you do this, you can fill in the boxes. I also recommend you make the boxes big enough so you can fit more than a word or two in them.

2. Specify.
This is the easy part, where you plug in Sunday through Saturday across the top of the social media platforms that you are using going down the left side. I would add your blog in there, as well, because you will need content for it, too.

3. Subject. I recommend going with a theme for the week or month, as it makes it so much easier to write content around a theme. One example I can give you is that because my business is about Social Media, sometimes I theme it around platforms, like Facebook LinkedIn, or Twitter.

4. Stick with it. Go as far as you can, take a break to refresh yourself, then resume. Let the content flow. If you need to walk away, do so. But come back. When you plan your content ahead of time, the year goes better.

I hope this helps.
